A Natural Dance

Subtly, tensions gather force inside,
            tied to charged memories,
            or future imaginings.
They come to the surface,
            release their energy, descend again.
A natural dance—beautiful, the way anything in nature is,
            if seen in quiet,
from inside, yet still a short distance away.

A gate shuts.
A dog howls.
Someone complains.

From our internal perch,
            we see these outside forces
            creating other movements
            of tension and release.
We put them in their
            own separate channel inside,
like different density substances in a lava lamp,
            rising and falling.

No longer an impingement, just interplay,
and a feeling of freedom—
            as we dance with it,
            as in nature,
as in who we are underneath.
